چکیده مقاله:

Background: Methanol is a highly toxic alcohol and causes such severe side effects as CNS depression, blindness, acute renal failure and even death. Methods: Patients were three male referrals (aged 29-56 years) to the poisoning center at Taleghani Hospital, Urmia, Iran, in 2020. They had unknowingly ingested methanol. Their chief problems were bilateral blindness and metabolic acidosis. Upon taking medical history and physical examinations, they were assessed by an ophthalmologist, while testing the arterial blood gases and standard laboratory tests. They were given standard treatments and antidotes 3-4 days, which did not reverse the blindness. Subsequently, each patient was injected with five doses of subcutaneous erythropoietin every second day. The visual acuity progress was monitored daily until their discharge from the hospital. Results: Following 3-4 days of ineffective standard treatments, patients were injected with low doses of subcutaneous erythropoietin, which gradually reversed the visual acuity to normal level over the next 7 to 9 days. The patients were discharged from the hospital 10-12 days post admission, with normal visual acuity and without having any side effects. Conclusions: The subcutaneous erythropoietin effectively relieved the acute optic neuropathy and reversed the blindness to normal vision. This study is the first to investigate the therapeutic effects of subcutaneous erythropoietin in the treatment of optic neuropathy secondary to methanol intoxication.

Therapeutic Effects of High Dose Intravenous Prednisolone on Methanol Induced Toxic Optic Neuropathy

Background: The effects of high dose steroids for the treatment of methanol optic neuropathy was evaluated in this study. Methods: In an interventional case series, 9 patients with a history of sudden visual loss after an ingestion of homemade alcoholic beverages were included in the study. The patients received 250 mg intravenous methyl prednisolone every 6 hours for 4 days continued with oral...

Optic nerve involvement in a case of methanol poisoning.

The eyes and optic nerves were studied histologically in a fatal case of methanol poisoning in a 37-year-old man. The most striking findings were bilateral central necrosis of the optic nerves from behind the lamina cribrosa to the orbital apex. Proximal parts of the nerve and the tract showed no necrosis. It is suggested that the complex blood supply of the nerve may be of importance.

Methanol optic neuropathy: a histopathological study.

The histopathologic effects of methanol on the optic nerve were studied in four patients. Circumscribed myelin damage occurred behind the lamina cribrosa in each nerve. Axons were preserved. Demyelination also occurred in cerebral hemispheric white matter in one patient. This selective myelinoclastic effect of methanol metabolism is probably caused by histotoxic anoxia in watershed areas of the...

Erythropoietin both protects from and reverses experimental diabetic neuropathy.

Erythropoietin (EPO) possesses generalized neuroprotective and neurotrophic actions. We tested the efficacy of recombinant human EPO (rhEPO) in preventing and reversing nerve dysfunction in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes in rats. Two days after STZ [60 mg/kg of body weight (b.w.), i.p.], diabetic animals were administered rhEPO (40 microg/kg of b.w.) three times weekly for 5 weeks either...

AIM To determine the clinical features of amiodarone induced optic neuropathy, which may help distinguish it from non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy. METHODS Retrospective observational case series of patients diagnosed with amiodarone induced optic neuropathy at the neuro-ophthalmology service from March 1998 to February 2001. Amiodarone was discontinued after discussion with ...

Linezolid-induced optic neuropathy

Many systemic antimicrobials have been implicated to cause ocular adverse effects. This is especially relevant in multidrug therapy where more than one drug can cause a similar ocular adverse effect. We describe a case of progressive loss of vision associated with linezolid therapy. A 45-year-old male patient who was on treatment with multiple second-line anti-tuberculous drugs including linezo...
